About Simeanna Home

The Name Simeanna

Most people had grown accustomed to the term “Senior Citizens Home/Clinic”. Then someone in authority suggested we use a shorted name.

After various options the name “Simeanna Home” was chosen as most appropriate.

The name is a combination of the names “Simeon” and “Anna” the two old people who figured in the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. Both had cherished a life-long wish to see and meet the Promised Messiah. Simeon was assured by the Holy Spirit that this great hope would be relaized.

The name “Simeanna” also signifies that the Home/Clinic will cater for both men and women, and will be a living memory of Leonard and Clearvana Pierre (both now deceased) who gave over their home to the church.

A Little History

The home, located at 42 Kandahar Street, St James, was officially opened by His Grace - The Archbishop Anthony Pantin on Saturday 4th June 1987.

The Parish Priest, who was instrumental in the establishing of the home, was Fr. Herbert Seignoret. He faithfully visited residents every Saturday. His successor Fr O’Laughlin continued in his path.

The first staff comprised a retired matron of POS General Hospital, Effie Girdharrie and her assistant Mrs Beatrice Noel. She held the position of manager/matron (both are now deceased).

Eight trainees were sent from Servol to complete their practical nursing training, after which they were permanently employed.

The cook, Mrs Joy Blake was recommended by Fr Seignoret. Mr David Marshall was employed as a live-in caretaker/security.

The board of management comprised Mr John Wilson, Mrs Mildred Mitchell, Mrs Claudette Nyarko, Mrs Gloria Coelho, Mrs Madge Lopez and Ms Effie Girdharie. Years later, Mr Anthony Alleyne was a successor.

The Residents

Some of the earlier residents, who graced the home were Mrs Rita Osborne and Ester Lazare, who were the first residents. Others were Mrs Lena Franco, Mr Victor Garcia, Mrs Fernande Boniface, Mrs Iris Gittens, who was a retired matron of POS General Hospital and Mrs Maria Dabreu, a faithful fan of Holly Betaudier’s Scouting for Talent.

The Community

On a Sunday of every month, Dr Ramsoondar held his monthly clinic, which catered to the needs of the St James community. In his absence Dr Sandy was the attending physician.
